Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief - Rick Riordan, Percy Jackson and the Olympians (Relectura)

"Tan entretenida como la primera vez"

Percy Jackson is a good kid, but he can't seem to focus on his schoolwork or control his temper. And lately, being away at boarding school is only getting worse - Percy could have sworn his pre-algebra teacher turned into a monster and tried to kill him. When Percy's mom finds out, she knows it's time that he knew the truth about where he came from, and that he go to the one place he'll be safe. She sends Percy to Camp Half Blood, a summer camp for demigods (on Long Island), where he learns that the father he never knew is Poseidon, God of the Sea. Soon a mystery unfolds and together with his friends—one a satyr and the other the demigod daughter of Athena - Percy sets out on a quest across the United States to reach the gates of the Underworld (located in a recording studio in Hollywood) and prevent a catastrophic war between the gods.

The Magician's Nephew - C.S. Lewis, Narnia 1

"As slow as I remember"

Narnia...where the woods are thick and cool, where the Talking Beasts are called to life, a new world where the adventure begins.
Digory and Polly meet and become friends one cold, wet summer in London. Their lives burst into adventure when Digory's Uncle Andrew, who thinks he is a magician, sends them hurtling to...somewhere else. They find their way to Narnia, newborn from the Lion's song, and encounter the evil sorceress Jadis, before they finally return home.

It was a long time ago when I first read The Magician's Nephew. I was a little girl and I read the book in Spanish. This time I got hold of the English audiobook.
I vaguely remember this story being a little boring, entertaining, but not as much as the others. This is what this second read has been: entertaining for the long working hours but not as good as other audiobooks I've tried.

We're Going to Need More Wine - Gabrielle Union

"This is what I was looking for"

In the spirit of Amy Poehler’s Yes Please, Lena Dunham’s Not That Kind of Girl, and Roxane Gay's Bad Feminist, a powerful collection of essays about gender, sexuality, race, beauty, Hollywood, and what it means to be a modern woman.
One month before the release of the highly anticipated film The Birth of a Nation, actress Gabrielle Union shook the world with a vulnerable and impassioned editorial in which she urged our society to have compassion for victims of sexual violence. In the wake of rape allegations made against director and actor Nate Parker, Union—a forty-four-year-old actress who launched her career with roles in iconic ’90s movies—instantly became the insightful, outspoken actress that Hollywood has been desperately awaiting. With honesty and heartbreaking wisdom, she revealed her own trauma as a victim of sexual assault: "It is for you that I am speaking. This is real. We are real."

This is the kind of book I was looking for when I started listening to Well, That Escalated Quickly: Memoirs and Mistakes of an Accidental Activist. This memoir It's funny, explicative, exciting, true and makes you think a little.

Gabrielle talks about her childhood, her failed marriage, his long lost friends, 10 things I hate about you, Prince, girl stuff, sex, parenthood, Heath Ledger, dogs, rape, cancer and all the thing that have affected, touched and passed by in her lifetime.

Just a really good book (or audiobook), I listened while I was working and It's really easy to follow while making other stuff.
All I can add it's that Union's voice it's the sweetest thing while reading.

Well, That Escalated Quickly - Franchesca Ramsey

"Not exactly what I was expecting"

Franchesca Ramsey didn't set out to be an activist. Or a comedian. Or a commentator on identity, race, and culture, really. But then her YouTube video "What White Girls Say . . . to Black Girls" went viral. Twelve million views viral. Faced with an avalanche of media requests, fan letters, and hate mail, she had two choices: Jump in and make her voice heard or step back and let others frame the conversation. After a crash course in social justice and more than a few foot-in-mouth moments, she realized she had a unique talent and passion for breaking down injustice in America in ways that could make people listen and engage.
In her first book, Ramsey uses her own experiences as an accidental activist to explore the many ways we communicate with each other--from the highs of bridging gaps and making connections to the many pitfalls that accompany talking about race, power, sexuality, and gender in an unpredictable public space...the internet.

I wasn't expecting this kind of memoir. I was looking for another kind of The Girl with the Lower Back Tattoo, and while I have to admit that some anecdotes are funny the general spirit of the book is more to teach about racism and what to expect from internet attacks than the fun of it all.

Amusing but not really my cup of tea.

QUOTE 378

"Do not pity the dead, Harry. Pity the living, and, above all, those who live without love."

QUOTE 377

" 'Expecto patronum!'
From the tip of his wand burst the silver doe: she landed on the office floor, bounded once across the office and soared out of the window. Dumbledore watched her fly away, and as her silvery glow faded he turned back to Snape, and his eyes were full of tears.
'After all this time?'
'Always' "

QUOTE 376

" 'You kept him alive so that he can die at the right moment?' 'Don't be shocked, Severus. How many man and women have you watched die?'
'Lately, only those I could not save,' said Soane. He stood up. 'You have used me.'
'Meaning?'
'I have spied for you, and lied for you, put myself in mortal danger for you. Everything was supposed to be to keep Lily Potter's son safe. Now you tell me you have been raising him like a pig for slaughter -' "

QUOTE 375

"Just as Voldemort had not been able to possess Harry while Harry was consumed with grief for Sirius, so his thoughts could not penetrate Harry now, while he mourned Dobby. Grief, it seemed, drove Voldemort out, though Dumbledore, of course, would have said it was love..."

QUOTE 374

" 'And what would you say, Royal, to those listeners who reply that in these dangerous times, it should be "wizards first"?' asked Lee.
'I'd say that it's one short step from "wizards first" to "pure-bloods first", and then to "Death Eaters",' replied Kingsley. 'We're all humans, aren't we? Every human life is worth the same, and worth saving.' "

QUOTE 373

"Never once has he imagined Dumbledore's childhood or youth; it was as though he has sprung into being as Harry had known him, venerable and silver-haired and old. The idea of a teenage Dumbledore was simply odd, like trying to imagine a stupid Hermione or a friendly Blast-Ended Skrewt."

There are so many things that I love about this book.
The book series it's like a thousand miles better than the movies, of course, Peeves it's only in one of them. Neville, Luna, And Ginny are far more important in the books, and, I mean, who does not love them? That's why I like to make a reread every now and then. It's really easy to see again the movies in one sitting, but the books usually take me more time (even more if you count that they're rereads and I can space them through time without missing anything).

I have to say my favorite moment by far it's when Neville gets out of the sorting hat Gryffindor's sword. Can't miss that part!

I have to admit, I cried, again, like a baby, all the way through the end of the book. Through the battle of Hogwarts, though death and memories.
